What is a smart city?

Why is 5G an essential building block of smart cities?

A smart city makes use of ICT to improve its various services, and thus the quality of life of its inhabitants. The organisation of the town, its resources and services are studied to install new intelligent and networked systems.

The data flowing from this set-up are the key to a better use of the town’s resources and enhancing the well-being of its residents. There is no lack of examples, and these are no longer new.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is the basis of a smart city: the things that surround us day by day are becoming increasingly interconnected, receiving and transmitting information.

This increasing number of connections will undoubtedly necessitate new infrastructures and new communication standards.

Being able to support up to 1 million connected pieces of apparatus per square kilometre, the 5G network emerges of necessity as the leading technology for smart cities. The situation has finally eased following long delays in awarding licences.

NRB has obtained its 5G licence:

Real-life examples

in Belgium

Following a test phase, the police in the Ixelles zone of the Brussels-Capital region, approved the use of “bodycams” in 2021. As the name implies, these miniature cameras equip the uniforms of police officers wishing to use them. It permits them, when they deem necessary, to film their actions and potentially share them to a dedicated server.

Between 2015 and 2017, the Walloon region and the SmartNodes start-up in Liège developed a solution allowing towns to reduce their consumption of public lighting by up to 80%. The module embeds a series of mini-sensors and a microcomputer. It is able to detect the presence (or absence) of people in the vicinity. A lighting system equipped like this only illuminates when necessary.
